Weigh With Words *Super Late Movie Review Edition*
I don't apologize for being the last to check out a lot of things that I finally get around to. I've almost never contributed to even my favorite artists first week numbers or sold out concerts, and I'm definitely not an opening weekend moviegoer. I don't believe the hype! I tend to let the buzz die down before I check out whatever it is so that I can view or listen to it with a fair and unbiased perspective. That said, I JUST rented "The Book of Eli" this past Friday night, on a whim and checked it out. I was drawn into it from the very beginning even though it delivered pretty much exactly what I expected: Denzel Washington in familiar fashion as 'Black Dude with Attitude.' The inject of shadowy but gratuitous fight scenes was definitely a macho man's plus too. Shortly after came the welcomed addition of Mila Kunis whom I'm convinced makes anything that she's a part of, better! Certain scenes of the movie had a kind of wild west element that was also to my liking. There weren't many long drawn out breaks in the action which kept me interested. No nudity or even explicit sexual references really, which ALMOST made the film family friendly. I don't know the name of the actor that played the villain but his performance was typical. Not too over the top and definitely not too original. Without giving away the ending, I'll just say I sat on the edge of my seat, slack-jawed until I realized how very unrealistic what they wanted the viewer to believe really was. All in all, it was 2 hours pretty well spent.I think "The Book of Eli" isn't one of those films to be taken at face value, but more one who's goal is to stir thought within the person watching. Its one of those 'beacon of light in a dark world' kind of deals that gives people something to believe in no matter how impossible the odds are. I tend to be more of a realist than a dreamer but I was for the most part able to look past the far-fetched and recognize the symbolism. I give it the go ahead and recommend checking out "The Book of Eli." |
